Who Studies Abroad and Where Do They Go?

On top of deciding where to study abroad, students have to figure out when the best time is to do it throughout their years in college in order to accommodate to their particular fields of study. Although health science students at Quinnipiac University are more limited with the specific year they have to go as well as their selection of schools, people with other majors are able to choose from several universities within a wide variety of countries.

According to the Institute of International Education, the United Kingdom is the most popular place for U.S. students to study abroad. In the years of 2010-2011, a whopping 33,182 students were studying at universities there. Also, the data revealed the most popular year to go abroad is junior year.

“I chose to go to London, England because ever since I was little, I was fascinated by the culture,” said junior public relations major Katie Pinto. “Out of all the places I could go, the fast-paced city, art, culture and theatre in London will enhance the cultural perspective of my major.”

Also according to the Institute of International Education, the most popular field of study of those who go abroad is social science closely followed by those with business and management majors. Also, 64.4 percent of those who study abroad are female while only 35.6 are male.

“I chose to go to Ireland because they speak English and I want to explore all of Europe,” said junior sociology major Emily Maggio. “I also think it will be interesting to take sociology courses there and see their perspective. Also, I think junior year is the best year to do it because you are more independent and mature.”
